All Projects
We create innovative, new spaces to help maintain an excellent learning environment at UBC. Renovation projects are chosen based on factors such as general campus-wide needs, the age and condition of the space, pedagogical requirements, compatibility with other projects, and the availability of resources. Take a look at some recent classroom projects.
Leonard S. Klinck (LSK) 121 Coding Lab
LSK 121 was a poorly equipped, under-utilized computer lab in need of an upgrade. In collaboration with the Department of Mathematics, the Learning Spaces Team converted the room into an innovative teaching lab suitable for both computational/coding activities and traditional instruction.
Hennings 200 Active Learning Theatre
In 2017, UBC’s Learning Spaces Team undertook a project that would see the transformation of an iconic traditional lecture theatre, Hennings 200, into UBC’s first collaborative lecture theatre. The new HENN 200 layout allows for instruction to seamlessly switch between small group work and front-of-room teaching, without the need for furniture reconfigurations.
UBC Life Building 2201 (Old SUB Building Renewal)
The UBC Life Building (previously named the Student Union Building or Old SUB has been converted into a 294-seat teaching theatre. Located at the geographic heart of campus, it is now suitable for use as swing space for future projects where large theatres would be temporarily taken out of the classroom inventory.
University Centre Lower Level Active Learning Classrooms
When the Bachelor of International Economics (BIE) program moved to a new building, the Learning Spaces team saw an opportunity to create new active learning classrooms. Each room has its own distinct characteristics, ranging from low-tech classrooms utilizing multiple whiteboard surfaces for collaboration to high-tech AV driven collaborative spaces.
Orchard Commons Active Learning Classrooms
Orchard Commons is a new academic and residential hub that provides 21 versatile classrooms as part of the general UBC Learning Space inventory.
Lasserre 102 Theatre Upgrade
Over the summer of 2016, LASR 102 was updated to better meet the needs of 21st century students and professors. As one of the first classrooms outfitted with laser projectors, this project represented a major step forward technology-wise for UBC.
Ponderosa Commons Classrooms
Ponderosa Commons is the first academic and residential hub introduced at UBC. By experimenting with furniture, room layouts, and colour, the Learning Spaces Team paved the way for the future of mixed-use spaces at UBC.
HEBB 100 Seismic Upgrade + Theatre Modernization
Seismic upgrades to the Modernist, 60s-built Hebb Building was the catalyst for space improvements to enhance teaching and learning experiences for current and future students and faculty members. In collaboration with the Physics and Astronomy department, Hebb's theatre space was reimagined to suit current and future pedagogical needs.
Leonard S. Klinck 462 Active Learning Classroom
In the summer of 2015, the Learning Spaces Team put a renovation plan in motion to address the acoustic issues in LSK 462 and to turn the space into one of the first active learning classrooms on campus. The new layout seats seven groups of six students at height-varied hexagonal tables, supporting both blended and flipped classroom pedagogies.
Food Nutrition and Health 60 Modernization
Prior to 2013, the FNH 60 basement lecture theatre had not been renovated since the building was originally completed in 1983. Despite tight deadlines, the Learning Spaces team was able to modernize the original look of the room with a full renewal of the AV and lighting systems, and new finishings.
