Ongoing Construction Activity Near Classrooms

It is the start of the Academic year 2022/23, and project teams are working diligently to minimize construction impact when possible on the UBC Vancouver campus.

Many construction projects have planned for noisy work to be completed during the summer months, however, due to delays in materials and resource shortages, some of the work is continuing into the fall and impacting students, faculty, and staff.  While there are signs of improvement in the supply chain, project teams continue to face challenges with extended lead times for materials, labour shortages, and transportation delays that impact construction. As a result, you may notice a higher-than-normal volume of construction projects underway on campus.

Noise impact during construction

Project teams are committed to working with faculty and staff to minimize disruptions to teaching and research; however, there are many considerations when putting together the construction schedule. The schedule is typically planned with key stakeholders at least 8-12 months in advance, and while the current supply chain issues have created last-minute changes, it is critical to keep the projects moving toward completion.

Project teams are trying to schedule noisier work and planned shutdowns outside of scheduled exams and specified events. We are unable to move all classes that are near the construction areas, due to limited classroom availability.
